Triggering some programs with context menu sends them to background

#1 Post by sfgs97 » 24.05.2023, 18:15

FreeCommanderPortable_2023_Build_880
Windows 10 22H2 64bit

Steps to reproduce:
1) Right-click on a file or folder and select "Scan with Microsoft Defender..."

The Microsoft Defender window appears in the foreground a split-second but then goes to the background where it can no longer be seen. This is contrary to performing the same action in Windows Explorer or alternate file explorers (e.g. XYPlorer) which I have tried.

FYI: The above is just one example. I have also sporadically oberved this behavior with some other software triggered via context menu but it isn't as consistently reproduceable as the example above.

That doesn't happen here.
Defender comes in the foregound and I can see while its scanning.

Strange. It happens to me every single time. Even after exiting FreeCommander and restarting. It always send the Defender scan window to the background after a split-second. Anyone have any idea how to resolve this? TIA

I can reproduce it in 880 32-bit public, always.

I can't reproduce it in 889 64-bit donor, never.

I have a similar problem with another program, after some action, program dialog is opened in foreground, but sometimes the same dialog is opened in background, in both 64-bit and 32-bit version of the program, it could be a Windows issue, I think.

I'm not sure about the specific Defender issue.

Using Windows 10 22H2 64-bit.

OK, I'm using the 880 32 bit public so that confirms it. Thanks for posting! Hopefully this version can be updated to work like the 64 bit version since it doesn't happen there.

The 32 bit version use helper exe FcContextMenu64.exe for showing the 64 bit context menu.
It could be the cause.
If it is possible to start Defender per command line you can try to use favorite tool button for starting scan.

Defender command line from my WinRAR config:
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 3 -File "%f"
This can be changed to FC and made as a Favorite toolbar entry.

Thanks for the info. However, I've tried about 10 different ways of creating a favorite to accomplish this and none of them work. If you can get one to launch Defender, scan the selected file(s) or folder(s), and keep that window in the foreground, please provide exact details. Thanks again!

FC has some problems using cmd.exe with parameters
but this Favorite button works

OK, you're coming at this from using a command prompt window. Thanks for providing an alternative/workaround but I was trying to find a way to get the same Windows Defender scan window you get by right-clicking a file/folder and choosing Scan With Microsoft Defender. I prefer that window due to it a) being easier to read and b) providing the additional information of how many files it scanned, which is helpful to know when scanning a folder or an archive file.
