Empty Folder Indicator

#1 Post by picard » 02.04.2023, 08:26

I would like to have the ability to see if a folder is empty in the tree. Maybe an indicator on the icon, or a different color icon? Or maybe the name is colored or styled differently--italicized or darker?

That may give a large delay if browsing into a folder which has a very deep sub-dir structure.
So it should never be on as default.

Yes, just like the "Size of Folders" option it should be off by default and the documentation should note the potential performance impact.

And / or perhaps a list of empty folders could be stored in a separate file and constantly updated?

Sorry a strange idea as it would need an FC background process.
This problem is solved using Total Commander together with the Everything search tool.
There is always an actual size info when entering any dir.
I use scripts found in the FC forum to use Everything inside of FC
but this would better be solved if Marek would use the free Everything SDK to integrate it.

Perhaps you could explain, what you need, just find empty folders, delete empty folders, or something else?

From the FAQ: How to find empty folders?

In the main file list panel it's possible to identify empty folders also using the new view modes, like Thumbnails list, Thumbnail details or Thumbnail labels - thumbnails for empty folders are different + it's possible to use column profiles for these views too, to show size or number of items.

0 Byte(s) in the “Size” column doesn’t mean the folder is empty, it may contain folder(s) and/or file(s) with size 0 Bytes.

There are some folders visible in the tree that are usually empty but it would be nice to see when background processes moves files into them. They're not in the current folder so turning on "Size of Folders" doesn't help. Please regard this request as a very low priority. I made the request to see if anyone else needs this and if it was extremely easy to implement.

If it's just few specific folders, try this:
- copy these folders to file container tab (not temporary) and lock it
- use column profile - add "Items" column (and column "size auto" too)
- in automatic views for file container use thumbnail details view, size 48, sort on "size", show size of folders "active"

This way you could watch those folders, by size, number of "items" and also by mini-thumbnail if you will be using thumb details view, thumbnail is different for empty folders, you can also enter any folder directly from file container if needed.
