Lock View + Save Settings is Ignored on Restart

#1 Post by sfgs97 » 11.07.2023, 18:30

Using: FreeCommanderPortable_2023_Build_880.paf.exe
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Bug: Set folder to Details view. Select Lock view. Save settings. Despite this, on next restart FC shows the folder in Thumbnails view. I feel sure it is allowing the setting to show folders which predominantly contain image files in thumbnail view to override setting/locking/saving a different view. In anticipation of those who might claim this isn't a bug, I will just say that myself and all others I have consulted for their opinion on this situation have agreed that if the user makes a point of setting a specific view for a specific folder and then locking that view and saving settings then that choice should be honored by the software. And, no, turning off the setting to show folders which predominantly contain image files in thumbnail view is not an acceptable workaround since I do indeed want every other folder with mostly images to automatically use thumbnail view. It's just this one specific folder that I don't and the consensus opinion here is that if the user sets a folder to a specific view and locks/saves it then than choice should be honored. Thus, I am reporting this as a bug.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not.

Anyway, this option locks view for all tabs, so it's not very good to use it permanently, even after program restart.

If you need a different view just for 1 specific folder, or few folders, you can use Automatic views.

Select Lock view

Do you mean Lock folder tab option from the menu appearing after executing a right click on a Tab?

If yes then I cannot recall such bug ever happening to me - nor is it happening now in Build 891 64-bit Donor Portable and 880 32-bit Public. And I use a lot locked Tabs and often utilize the Detailed view mode

Then I must be doing something wrong, as I do not get to experience this [in both aforementioned versions]

As Karol said, I'm referring to Lock View under the View Menu. And I can replicate this every single time because what I described in the OP happens after every restart of FC. If you're not replicating it then I suspect it's because you aren't using the setting I alluded to in the OP; therefore, I will clarify:

In Settings go to View -> Column Profiles/Automatic Views -> Auto Selectable Views tab -> click Switch view mode automatically on folder change (if not already clicked) -> click View name Pictures -> Content condition type = At least half the files match the filter -> Viewtype = Thumbnails 192 -> Sort on = Name.

Now, take a folder with more than half pictures in it and change the view to Details then Lock View. Finally, save settings then exit FC. On restart that folder will instead display Thumbnails even though you locked its view to Details.

"Lock View" is for temporäry usage only and was never intended to be save per tab or per folder.

Thanks for your reply and explanation. Although I understand what you're saying, I hope you will also understand that many users would not interpret "Lock View" as something that is temporary. Lock sounds like the view is locked until you specifically do something to UNlock it and therefore if you chose the Lock View feature then the view is not going to change. My vote would be to adjust how Lock View functions. However, in the meantime, is there some way for myself (and other users) to accomplish locking the view of a specific folder so it won't be changed by an Automatic View rule as I described previously? Thanks!

As suggested by Dreamer - you can use Automatic View:
- define new automatic view with the condition "All subfolders "
- as condition type your folder, e.g. c:\Docs\MyFolder
- for the automatic view define desired View Type and Column Profile
- move the automatic view to the top of the list
- save all
