824 failure after Windows 10 Updates KB4565483/4565633/4565554

#1 Post by Foxfan20 » 18.07.2020, 17:38

I downloaded 824 Donor a couple of days ago, and it worked fine. This afternoon, after pausing Quality updates to W10 Pro 1909, I ran WU and the following updates were installed:-
-KB4565483 - various security updates to several W10 elements
-KB4565633 - .NET update for Framework 3.5 and 4.8
-KB4565554 - Servicing Stack Update

After restart, FC 824 appeared with both panes blank, which had been left showing Documents. Clicking "C:Windows" icon filled each pane with Documents. However, when I tried to exit FC, it would not do so and had to be killed by Task Manager. On rerunning FC, the process repeated itself as described.

I therefore reverted to 822 Donor, which seems fine.

I then reinstalled 824, which now comes up with the UAC as "Publisher Unknown". However, it does seem to start and exit correctly.

I should also mention that, for some reason, the Win10 updates I have listed DO NOT appear in WU>Settings>Update History, although they are listed in SYSTEMINFO and Control Panel>Installed Updates.

It all seems down to MS as usual, but I'd welcome any advice.

Hey Foxfan20,

I have the first two updates installed and am not experiencing the issue you described.

I am only guessing, maybe it has to do with kb4565554

You can read about the update here.

If it is the cause, there's not much you can do about it, according to MS, "Servicing stack updates (SSUs) make changes to how updates are installed and cannot be uninstalled from the device."
If you have a backup of your system from before the update, you may want to restore your system to that state and via Microsoft®Update-Katalog manually install the updates successively, checking to see if FC starts normally before installing the next update.

best regards

Thanks. I've installed 822, and 824, and am currently running 824.

Both work OK, with the difference that the 822 UAC shows the publisher as Marek, and 824 as "Unknown". I also notice that there is no 823 version available for download when I log on to Donor downloads, although it is listed and described in the change notes. Am I missing something here?

This is a mystery, but then of course we are dealing with Microsoft.

I spoke too soon.

Installed version was 824. As original problem, I left it with both panes showing Documents before shutdown. Started up, neither pane populated and toolbars missing. Click on C:Windows and panes populate, but then exit is impossible and FC 824 has to be closed by Task Manager.

I have gone back to 822.

824 and 825 same. "I left it with both panes showing Documents before shutdown. Started up, neither pane populated and toolbars missing. Click on C:Windows and panes populate, but then exit is impossible and FC 824/5 has to be closed by Task Manager."

My problem is same as above with Windows 10 64bit and 2004 latest release and updated.
824 was the same. Redownload 825 and same problem. Works as normal in all other ways so far.
When checking windows logging crash files created every time Freecommander closed task with task manager.
823 loaded and appears to work with out this problem.

Still not sure what's happening, but 824 seems to work OK now, but, after downloading and installing 825, that version starts throwing the problems I noted initially.

I've reverted to 824, which, having previously shown UAC publisher as "Unknown", now shows Marek, as it should.

This is some king of MS/Windows problem; perhaps to do with privilege, but it's hard to ascertain.

A recurrence on 824, with Event Viewer showing an Application Hang 1002 error. Not possible to close FC, so killed it with Task Manager (twice). It is everywhere (.exe, links etc.) set to run as Admin, and when it runs correctly, top left FC screen shows "drive and folder"- (Admin)FreeCommander XE. On the dead, blank screens, this doesn't appear, which is logical.

I was about to revert to 822, but went to FC taskbar icon, right-click, "Run as Admin" (although per para above it's set to do so), and it ran up OK. I can't see how this can be anything other than a W10 problem, to do with security/ownership/privilege, although why it has suddenly arisen is far from clear. I'm still on W10 1909, so not a 2004 issue (yet!).

This is evidently to do with the "Start Maximized" as fixed in 827, and as reported in @minsik 's thread here viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10838.

My problem seems to be sorted now, although, as I reported above, I could get around it by using a Maximized shortcut, but starting FC (< 827) from taskbar icon with right click and "Run as Administrator".

Cheers all round!
