FC becomes horribly slow when I use it with an active VPN tunnel into my company's internal network.
Each and every action seems to start some background activity - probably searching the network.
This happens even if I work only locally and have the tree view switched off.
I guess this has to do with some of my drive letters being mapped to network drives. If I start FC with a different windows user who has no such mappings the performance is normal.
Is there any solution / configuration to avoid this problem - besides disconnecting the network drives which I'd rather avoid.
Thanks a lot!
FC very slow with active VPN connection
Re: FC very slow with active VPN connection
Dear all,
I have exactly the same problem. Do someone has a solution?
FreeCommander is a very good program and I love to use it at home (private) and in the office.
But currently I work very often in home office (with VPN) and FreeCommander is so slow that it is impossible to work normally. When I click F2 to rename a file or folder, it takes so long before I can type the new name that I forget the name I wanted to type
Msascheck has described it really good.
Just a few additonal information:
Best regards
Nicolas

Just a few additonal information:
- I use Windows 10 and
FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 810a 64-bit donor
- FreeCommander works perfectly when I am in the office
but very slow for all operations when I use VPN
- As soon as I start the VPN connection every operation with FreeCommander is very slow (copy file, move file, delete file, rename file, create order) even when I work with local files on my hard drive!
- Windows Explorer can perform the same operations much quicker.
so it is not a problem with the VPN connection.
- For example to move a file in another folder takes approx.
- <1 second in the office
- 2 to 3 second with active VPN and Windows Explorer
- 15 to 30 second with active VPN and FreeCommander
Best regards
Nicolas
Re: FC very slow with active VPN connection
I found an answer in this similar topic and it seems to work (at least partially) also for me:
https://freecommander.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6602
https://freecommander.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6602
I also switched off the "tool tip" (in German "Quickinfo") and it is now not perfect but better. My access to network drives was unbearably slow.
But I switched off 'Show files and folders tooltip'
(Settings -> File/Folder List -> General -> View)
and now its much better.
Re: FC very slow with active VPN connection
Some other tips:
- Switch off the tree
- "Folder-Size of folder" should be not active (check both sites separated)
- Settings "File/folder list"-Icons - use fixed or registered for network drives
- Use not to much colors under settings "File/folder list": Items color
I think it is not only FC problem.
If I work with FC and VPN I don't notice any difference in the work, except maybe for thumbnail view.
