Favorites text too large - wont stay smaller.

#1 Post by minsik » 07.06.2015, 12:08

Windows 8.1 64 bit with Freecommander 64 bit donor 691 and 692 (only ones I have used since discovering FC)

The Favorites bar appears on the lhs with the alt+f shortcut but the text appears larger than it should be.
In the settings it can be resized and saved but later on opening the favourites its large again.

I only can think of the following setting you should check:

Thanks alf5000.

I did discover that with the 691 version and as I am not a large user of those functions it was not a biggie. Now as i learn more with FreeCommander which has so much under the hood in features it is used a bit more.

I had originally made sure to save the settings and then the backups, and tried loading in a backup option set and all the time appears ok for a while then just appears incorrectly. No idea why or really when.

Will monitor and try and see what happens. I will also see if there is a set to default and work from there.

thanks.

Minsik.

ps seems like http://forum.freecommander.com/viewtopi ... =22&t=6670 has the same trouble in third item.

I have encountered this problem too.

It seems to get triggered when you make any revisions to the settings--excluding the ones mentioned by alf500--and re-save them. The font size settings for the Favorites tree gets all mangled whenever other settings are changed and then re-saved.

Therefore, it's a bit of a hassle whenever you use Tools | Settings to do further customization. First, make your desired changes, apply them, then exit the settings. Second, return to Tools | Settings and fix the font size settings for the Favorites tree. Not an elegant process but at least this workaround is available.

  • Some behavior details which may be helpful:
  • Only the Favorites Tree font size is affected. The File System Tree does not change even when both trees are visible.
  • The change takes place as soon as the Settings menu is opened, as seen in the preview of the View|Tree > Colors/Fonts/Icons tab.
  • The font size changes by increments.
    Image
+Numbers below represent the total mathematical difference. (+Numbers) refer to the font-size menu-list quantum jumps ; blue numbers are non-quantal increments. Red numbers are not included in the font-size menu-list.
For example, "10 > 13, +3 (+2+1) means the font size jumped two menu steps (11, 12) and then incremented by 1 to produce the final result of 13 which is not in the menu list.
    • 8 > 10, +2 (+2)
    • 9 > 11, +2 (+2)
    • 10 > 13, +3 (+2+1)
    • 11 > 14, +3 (+2)
    • 12 > 14, +2 (+1)
    • 13 > 16, +3 (+1+1)
    • 14 > 18 +4 (+2)
    • 15 > 19 +4 (+1+1+1 or some other variant)
    • 16 > 20 +4 (+2)
    • 18 > 23 +5 (+2+1)
    • 20 > 25+5 (+2+1)
Gosh, I was hoping some simple recognizable pattern would result from that analysis, but I think I may have only made things even worse.

Hello Underdog.

I think you have helped to identify the exact problem.

Thanks for your observant number crunching. Your analysis of the font size differences does, in fact, reveal a pattern of sorts. It seems to be related to Windows' percentage scaling of text for display, as per your preferences in the Control Panel.

For example, in Win7 I can choose to "make text and other items larger or smaller" using a Control Panel option. Win7 offers only three choices: 100%, 125% or 150% (unlike XP, which let you select a much more granular level, like 110%).

If this Windows universal (display) text sizing option is set to 125%, for example, then the FCXE favorites tree text problem does indeed occur for any change to Settings. However, if it is left at 100% then that FCXE problem does not occur. I just tested if today.

Unfortunately, that default Windows 100% setting is not optimal for everyone. I use 125%, and thus get the bug we are now discussing.

In summary, I think the problem is that the Favorites tree font size defaults back to the universal Windows text scaling percentage after a change to Settings. You won't notice this as a problem unless that scaling percentage is not at 100%.

Hope others can confirm my assessment of this bug.

You can change the size of screen items and text even in Win 7 without using the zoom function.
Use the "Advanced appearance settings" like at:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/29244/cu ... windows-7/

This really changes the font size and does not zoom the fonts.
A lot of programs have problems with zoomed fonts on buttons and dialogs.

Ralf

It was easy to fix this bug with the above info, thanks.
