600- high CPU usage
600- high CPU usage
Hi,
With FCXE release 600, at some point during my use of the program, the program's overall CPU usage will inevitably spike to 60% or more and stay there, no matter what I am doing within the program. I have a quad-core processor, and if I look at a usage graph in e.g. Task Manager, two of my cores will be running at ~75%, the other two at ~50% (with no other tasks running). FCXE is the only active task using any significant CPU. It will remain this way until I close FCXE, at which point my CPU idles. The odd thing is, neither FCXE nor the system as a whole become unresponsive (there's apparently enough extra CPU cycles to avoid that), but clearly, FCXE should not be using this much processor time when it isn't even doing anything.
I have not been able to track down any particular sequence of events that causes the CPU spike within FCXE. It normally happens when I've had the program running for awhile, but I've not been using FCXE in any unusual way... just basic file operations (moving, copying, etc.), double-clicking image or media files to view/play them in my default apps, and so on.
I had previously been using release 597, considering going back to it if this cannot be resolved quickly.
I am running FCXE on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, fully-patched with Windows Updates. System is a custom PC with Phenom II X4 955, Gigabyte motherboard, 8GB DDR3, nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB video, onboard Realtek audio, several SATA hard drives, and other miscellaneous hardware.

Re: 600- high CPU usage
I know only two processes I start in background:
- auto save settings
- load network in background
I think the duration of the first one is few seconds.
The loading of the network can be longer (few minutes?).
Deactivate both options and check again.

Re: 600- high CPU usage
I'll try disabling those options, but I'm doubtful they would have any effect. I'm not even doing any work on the network (most of the time my desktop PC is the ONLY active computer on my home LAN). As for the auto-save settings, I thought that option only saved the settings on program EXIT (at least, that's how it's worded in the program Settings dialog), not continuously while FCXE is being used?
Re: 600- high CPU usage
Yes, I mean "auto backup settings".As for the auto-save settings, I thought that option only saved the settings on program EXIT
Re: 600- high CPU usage
Oh, okay. I'll give it a try.Marek wrote:Yes, I mean "auto backup settings".As for the auto-save settings, I thought that option only saved the settings on program EXIT
The problem's been hard to pin down, since I can't point to any specific thing I've been doing with FCXE when the high CPU usage begins to happen. All I can say is, it's usually happening after the program has been open awhile and used to view a number of folders' contents, or to launch various files for viewing or editing. Which is pretty vague.
Re: 600- high CPU usage
I also have high CPU Usage with #601. I deactivated the mentiones "auto backup settings" and test.

Re: 600- high CPU usage
I have deakitvated the "backup" Setting. But a few Minutes later i have again high CPU Usage. In Processexplorer it reads 25% That is equivalent to one ove the CPU Cores (I have a Quad CPU)

I can not use FC until the CPU Load Problem is solved. It gets even worst: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1490505/Proces ... ernals.png

Re: 600- high CPU usage
In Process Explorer you can open (per double click on FreeCommander row) the Properties dialog.
You could check the "Threads" tab if some FC threads have high CPU usage.

OK, here's a Screenshot Running 5 Minutes:

Re: 600- high CPU usage
Darkwing's Process Explorer screenshot is similar to what mine looks like when the CPU usage spikes... the TID values differ, of course, but there would be two threads with non-zero CPU use, the "TraceProcess" one taking the majority. Once, I even saw a third thread using some CPU time. The actual CPU usage is always spead out over all four of my processor cores.
Re: 600- high CPU usage
Marek gave me an hint: When CPU load is high deactivate the directory tree by hitting Alt+T. After that the CPU load goes to normal (in my case). Then you can reactivate the tree view by hiztting Alt+T again.

Re: 600- high CPU usage
High CPU usage found here too
W7 64 quadcore : 25% full core
XP 32 single core : 85 %
No obvious reason : everything idle
Confirm the tree trick to - momentarily - get back to normal <1% usage

Re: 600- high CPU usage
The tree problem is fixed for the release 602.
Re: 600- high CPU usage
Is 602 available yet for download?
Thanks.
Thanks.
