Android MTP

#1 Post by m-a-r-k » 05.12.2019, 23:32

Is there any reason why I can copy files to various Android devices using Windows 10 File Explorer but can't when I open a device in one window in FC and try to copy files from the other window?
I get an error saying the device is unavailable or disconnected.
I'm using high quality Anker USB cables, same USB connections on PC etc. etc. It's not the hardware or Windows 10 so must be FC but I can't figure out why.

Hmm, OK so Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V works if I do the files one at a time.
Drag & Drop fails if I try to do more than one file, for example I tried to drag & drop 6 files and after 3 it then fails with the "The Requested value cannot be determined." error. The transfer is very slow (USB 3) but then FC has always had problems with slow file transfers and lockups over network etc.
Really weird and not good at all. Is it a buffer or cache thing?
That's really crappy in this day and age as Windows 10 has no problem dragging and dropping in File Explorer from various sources to and fro the Android device.

Even setting FC to use Windows and not FC method for copying fails.

The only way I can copy files from my Android 10 Pixel 4 XL to my local PC disk is to use the toolbar button 'Copies the selected item' (2 file icons and a green +), Drag & Drop, Copy & Paste sometimes work sometimes fails. Resorting to one file at a time usually works.

There used to be no problem on earlier versions of Android and earlier versions of Windows.

I have for testing some Android devices from Samsung, Sony, Huawei (smartphons and tablets).
On my Windows 10 1903 I can copy (drag&drop, copy&paste, F5) in both directions without problem (many files, many folders too).
By using drag&drop the option "Use blocking transfer..." must be active.

I didn't have that set as I don't like modal operations and dialogs which lock up the main window until finished.
I didn't know it had an effect on mobile devices via MTP.
Great, thanks Marek I'll give that a try.
