Options for Layouts

#1 Post by JohnFredC » 11.04.2014, 17:10

I have been looking forward to the layout functionality for quite a while and am very pleased to find it implemented in recent betas. However, as it is now, I don't expect to be able to make full use of the feature without the following additions.

After the user chooses a saved layout from the layout list, consider displaying a modal dialog containing following options:
  • ( ) 1. Replace current tabs with tabs in restored layout
( ) 2. Update current tabs with tabs in restored layout (for tabs whose names match only)
( ) 3. Append tabs in restored layout to current tabs
( ) 4. Merge tabs in layout with current tabs (combination of #2 and #3)
(•) 5. Ignore tabs in restored layout

(•) Apply restored layout to both panels
( ) Apply restored layout to left panel only
( ) Apply restored layout to right panel only
( ) Apply restored layout to active panel only
( ) Apply restored layout to inactive panel only

[x] Make above settings default for this layout
[x] Do not show this dialog next time
My specific case is to change the layout of the currently active panel only, without changing any tabs or locations, but other users may have other needs, hence the complexity of the choices listed above.

Thanks for listening!

Nice idea - I like it. But - what about those of us who have vertical layouts? In this case Left/Right needs to be Top/Bottom. So to avoid confusion and a plethora of redundant options, why not just limit the options to both, currently active, currently inactive?

I was a big fan of layouts in 2009b and personally I never needed and wouldn't want this dialog at all. I set up my various layouts and when I need a particular saved layout I'll just activate it. No further questions, no further options, I just get it. So if this dialog does get implemented, please allow those who don't want it to bypass it.
