Great utility! Deserves to be more widely used. Any chance of an update to enable searching within MS Office 2010 Word and Excel docs, ie .DOCX and .XLSX files?

The searching in the office files will be possible soon in the FreeCommander XE, however it is planed as bonus for the donors.

Is it now included in Ver. File Commander XE 0.0.0.601 ?

Yes, it is bonus for the donors.

How to configure the donor version for Office files searching:

- download the xdoc2txt utility from the site (last version 1.43)
- unpack the d2txt143.zip file to e.g. c:\tools\xdoc2txt
- open the FreeCommander XE search dialog and define the Converter



Now you can search the Office files for some content



You can use the xdoc2txt utility in Viewer too. Please check the site.

Thanks for all these informations. I did exactly what you described above (I double checked 3 times).
I still couldn't find a specific text string in a *.xlsx (or *.docx) file. I only get a list with some *.xls files, but no *.xlsx.
NB: your example is also only with *.doc files, not with *.docx !

Other questions:
Your parameter : "%ConvertSourceFile%">%ConvertTargetFile% has only quotes(") for %ConvertSourceFile%; correct ?
Filter name : *.doc,*.docx,*.xls,*.xlsx; is this important or can it just be e.g. "convert"

Yes, it is correct.

It is not the "Filter name" but "Filter". You can define the filter as on the screenshot
*.doc;*.docx;*.xls;*.xlsx
or as
.doc.docx.xls.xlsx (not before release 609)

You have used "," as separator - it is false. Be sure, you have activated the converter with the check box.

Oops ! it was my error. With ";" everything works as expected.

Reason why I'm so keen on this function is that it is so badly implemented / not useable in Windows 7.

I used the tool again today. And it didn't work !
I disabled the converter, create a new one (exactly the same as the previous one), and it worked.
I disabled the new converter, re enable the old one and it also worked.

There must be a bug somewhere ! (maybe just the fact that I changed sometime...was the solution)

Strange, but in FC XE 608 everything works for me in version xdoc2txt 1.45 and does not work in latest xdoc2txt 2.00 beta 0. May be something was changed? Nothing could be found. I changed paths, because in xdoc2txt 2.00 .exe file is located in subdirectory but it did not solved problem.

for me it works with 611.

when having a huge directory however, the search operation can be "freezed".

this is a nice feature.
