Crash when entering C:\ into address bar

#1 Post by catweazle9 » 30.03.2009, 10:41

[I'm using 2009.2]

If I press Alt+G to move focus to the address bar and then enter C:\ FreeCommander crashes. This works fine on a WinXP machine and only seems to crash on my Vista machine.

Shortly after posting, I discovered that the problem did not occur when running FreeCommander /NewIni=foo.ini /NoPlugins.

By comparing my original ini file, I finally found that this line was causing the problem:

Dir1=c:\Console2

I don't know what it is about this directory that causes the crash. It works fine with other directories ending in a number and other directories starting with C. It also works fine with a Console2 directory on a different (network) drive.

It's still readily reproducible if you need me to do any other tests...

Anyway, at least I have a workaround!

Unfortunately the problem has returned. Now FreeCommander is crashing when I have the following in my FreeCommand.ini :

Dir2=C:\Users\johnc.CITRITE\Documents

I just press Ctrl+G to move focus to the address bar, type "C:\" and the program crashes.

If I remove the above line it works fine.

I've appended below my .ini file that causes the crash - any ideas how to work around it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

John.

The problem seems somehow related to the actual directory configured for Dir2. It works fine when Dir2 is set to either of these:
C:\
C:\Users\johnc.CITRITE\Documents\AhkFavorites

.. but fails when it's this:
C:\Users\johnc.CITRITE\Documents

It sounds like there might be a memory corruption issue somewhere causing the seemingly random failure?

John.

I'm having a related problem. I right click on the address bar on either side. I select Edit Address Bar. I try to type anything and FC crashes. I don't even have a FreeCommand.ini file, so that's not the problem. This has persisted through several versions of FC. I am running Vista.

I have exactly the same problem on my Vista machine.

Can't confirm on Vista Home Premium 32 bit, but when using keyboard shortcut, Shift+C for example, such shortcuts are not disabled while typing in the address bar - therefore I can't type "C" for example, perhaps it's related...

Problems with FC in Vista may cause in missing writing-rights for the "program files" folder.
For searching the failure first check if it works when running FC as administrator.

FC always needs this "freecommander.ini". It is created after (fresh) installation or unzipping in the installation-folder.
Updating doesn't touch an existing ini-file.
So admin rights are necessary for this folder. Vista correctly blocks all writing access to the "programs" folder for non-admins.
After first start the admin should set the adjustment to have separate INIs for each user in his "application data" folder where writing-rights for the user are available.

Extras >>> settings >>> start program >>> config file

Ralf

Crash insert a "\" in the address bar

#9 Post by pao2009 » 01.12.2009, 09:43

I experienced a similar error: when I insert a "\" in the address bar FC crashes.
FC has worked with no error for about a week after the installation the program.
The problem disappear if I execute FC with the command line option /NewIni=myini.ini, I save settings with the specific menu item and then edit the address bar (FC crashes if I don't save the initial settings).
FC crashes if I delete the ini file before running FC without any command line option, no matter if I save settings before editing the address bar.
The differences between the two ini are:

Code: Select all

myini.ini
List1=vsReport
Dir1=C:\Program Files\FreeCommander
List2=vsReport
Dir2=C:\Program Files\FreeCommander

freecommander.ini
List1=vsReport
Dir1=C:\Windows\system32
List2=vsReport
Dir2=C:\Windows\system32
Same behavior even if I run FC as Administrator.

I now use FC 2009.02a with Win7 Ultimate but same error appears with FC 2008.06c and FC 2009.02. No problem on another PC with WinXp SP3.

I can execute more tests if needed (FC is too useful to give up using it...)

Same behavior on Windows-7 64-bit 2009.02a. I get "Unhandled exception at 0x774fdcbb in FreeCommander.exe: 0xC0000374: A heap has been corrupted.", looks like consequences of some misplaced API call? Like where you display drop-down for paths?

I know Marek is really busy, I'd really love to help to the extent of my abilities... FC is the best file manager I used, would be very sad to loose it. Is there a chance to get a source code maybe? I can sign NDA, if needed...

Re: Crash when entering C:\ into address bar

#11 Post by pao2009 » 05.03.2010, 13:22

I've made new tests.

The problem concern folder history (I mean that this error occurs in path completion phase only after a certain number of path stored in history).

I start FC from a clean ini file and it worsk correctly untill I get the error trying to enter a path in the address bar (the error occurs more or less every day, it's very irritating).

After the error I get the same error again each time I try to insert a path in the address bar if the automatically save settings option is selected. I can solve only starting FC from a clean ini file.

If the automatically save settings option is unchecked after the error I can run FC again and type a path in the address bar without any further error.

Marek, could you, please, try to investigate this issue?

It works fine on all PCs to which I have access. If someone have the problem and contact me directly per mail, we can try to make some tests.

I'm getting the crash that was originally described on Win7 x64. I use a keyboard shortcut to edit the path, go to c:\ and it crashes. I've had it happen 3 times in the past week but it isn't consistent. It's never happened on XP. I'm happy to help debug the issue. Just let me know what you'd like me to do.

I am here to confirm this bug. Using Windows 7 x64, FC 2009.02a. It crashes when \ is entered into address bar manually. Though, it doesn't if the path is pasted from clipboard.
