Feature Request: Norton Change Directory

#1 Post by nissensp » 15.08.2020, 14:33

Hi,

My first computer was a Tandy TRS-80 Model III. And my first PC was running DOS (at that time, almost nobody was using Windows).
Soon, I learned about utilities as PC Tools and Norton Utilities. I also became a big fan of Norton Change Directory (NCD).
Why?
- Because you can see the folder structure of a drive in (almost) full screen.
- You can navigate from one directory to another by using the arrow keys on the keyboard (or point 'n click with the mouse).
- You can type a part of the folder name, and Norton Change Directory will jump to the first folder that contains those characters in it's name. I believe it was F3 to jump to the next one. To enter that folder, hit 'Return' on the keyboard.

Here's a screenshot of Norton Change Directory: https://waterlan.home.xs4all.nl/ncd_tree.png

I would highly appreciate it if this will be implemented.

With kind regards,
Patrick

Todays large disks and amount of data makes other search tools better.
I use Everything search tool which finds anything in a second and allows to start FC with the result.

Everything Version 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.67

@horst.epp, I'm not referring to a search function. I'm referring to a function to quickly jump to another directory.
I use Locate32, Everything, Launchy, FileSeek and FileLocator Pro as a search tool. More and more I'm using Everything.

But the Everything search results allow you to jump directly to this dir inside of FC.
Normaly this is much faster than any tree function.
I use Total commander which has such tree function which is powered by Everything
and I still prefer to invoke the Everything search to quickly jump to some other dir.

I prefer to stay in FreeCommander when switching folder. But I will give it a go. How do I set it up?

Everything
Tools / Options / Context Menu
Make an entry for Open (Folders) like the following (adjust your pathes):
$exec("c:\Tools\FreeCommander\FreeCommander.exe" /C "%1")
You can make the same entry for Open Path, this will allow you to also position FC to a file from the results.

I even have a better way, using a AHK script which you start from inside of FC (Button or Hotkey).
Enter your search in an Pop-up Everything window
Select one of the results (File or Dir)
FC jumps directly to the dir or file you have selected.
If you are interested I may post it here.
