Since i upgrade to win 8.1, I had the same problem with build 650, 680,685. I have used build 650 for many months without any problem under Win 8 and then suddenly after installing win 8.1 update, sorting stop working. If i go back to root and come back to the folder that was block, everything work OK. The problem return after a while... Any idea?

I'm having the exact same problem. Running Build 685 32-bit public on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

I have to exit and restart FC to get column sorting back.

So far could not figure out based on what action column sorting stops working.

It's quite annoying...

oh btw. I am a 100€+ donor, so would be *awesome* if this bug could get some developer attention :-)

I confirm that clicking the Details View column headings to Sort consistently stops working after a while on FreeCommander XE 2014 Build 650 32-bit. A third circumvention (in addition to the two listed above) is to use the keyboard shortcuts to Sort (i.e., Sort by filename: Ctrl+F3 ; Sort by filetype: Ctrl+F4 ; Sort by timestamp: Ctrl+F5).
Please watch for/repro and fix this bug at your convenience. Thank you.

I can confirm it also with FreeCommander XE 2015 Build 685a 64-bit donor, on windows 7.
I've no idea how to reproduce it, the bug occurs sporadically.
