Compare in 2 panels

#1 Post by mgroen » 01.03.2020, 15:06

is it possible to use FC to compare 2 file listings, only on file name, excluding the extension?

If so, how to do that?

Thanks,

You can write all files of folder 1 and 2 without extension to textfiles 1 and 2 and then compare the textfiles.

Select all in Folder 1 > pathcopy-icon in adressline > chose "copy name without extension as text" > save to textfile1.txt
Select all in Folder 2 > pathcopy-icon in adressline > chose "copy name without extension as text" > save to textfile2.txt

For comparison of these textfiles you need a tool which can do this, e.g. PSPad, ExamDiff or WinMerge
The tool can be defined in settings > Programs > Compare files

Implemented in v790:
New action added "Copy name without extension as text"

The picture from FC-help doesn't show the new entry

I use Build 810a 32-bit public, portable version.
I don't have the option to copy without extension in the menu:

Right, it's missing in menu, all options should be in menu, if possible.

You can find it in the address bar copy button submenu, you can create a toolbar button or/and assign a keyboard shortcut too.

With all due respect, for me thats too much config to perform a simple task...

The tip from me would be: just put the function in an easy spot or easy to find menu.

I think, it should be in the main menu, but I'm using that option too, I added a toolbar button in the address bar in 1 minute and now it's really intuitive, in menu you would have to do few clicks, moving cursor, searching the right item, with the address bar button it's 1 unique item and just 1 click.

It's very easy to add this button:
- right click any address bar button and select "Define action toolbar..."
- in the quick filter (about the Cancel button) type "without"
- double click the item "Copy name without extension as text"
- click OK

It's really very easy to configure FC and it's impossible to add all items to "easy place" because 1000 users need 1000 different layouts.
BTW for some users the menu is easy to find, for others the address bar sub-menu is easier to find, for others the keyboard shortcut is the best solution.
That's why FC is so great, it can be easy for everyone, just a bit of time is needed to configure it, if you're using some actions often, just create a toolbar button and/or assign a keyboard shortcut.

I think, you are right, but also a lot people (like me), use FC as a tool and do not want/like to spend a lot of time configuring it. Easy/populair/handy functions should be available in the menu (drop down menu) by default when installation is done by default (a lot of people just click on OK during installation of a tool),
in my opinion comparing file listings with 2 panels without extension of the files is handy function and would be candidate for default visibility in the menubar AND in the drop down menu. But thats just my opinion...

Well,
I followed your advice now I am in the menu Define action toolbar,
I got stuck in this at this point (see screenshot):

what do I have to do now to get it a menu item in the menubar?

Thanks,

It's a misunderstanding, you can't add anything to main menu, you need to type "without" in the quick filter field - right above the OK/Cancel buttons, just to find that item easier and to add the toolbar button - and it's just the off topic item - "Copy name without extension as text". That's why it's better to have 1 issue per 1 topic.

Sorry, don't know what you mean...
Could we go back to original subject? Compare files in 2 panels?
